Plasmacluster Technology

SHARP’s unique bacteria-removing Plasmacluster Technology suppresses airborne viruses, and breaks down and removes airborne mold and other contaminants.

Plasmacluster Key Benefits

  • Suppresses the activity of airborne viruses
  • Suppresses the activity of airborne microbes
  • Acts on both airborne and adhering mold
  • Inactivates and removes airborne allergens like dust mite feces and dead dust mites
  • Inactivates and removes adhering odours (like tobacco smoke)
  • Removes static electricity which attracts airborne particles
  • Plasmacluster is effective all year round

Ions are released.

Plasmacluster Ions, the same positive and negative ions found in nature, are generated by plasma discharge and released into the air.

The ions are long-lasting*3 because they are surrounded by water molecules.

The ions act on airborne microbes.

The ions form hydroxide (OH) radicals that are highly oxidizing only when they adhere to the surfaces of mold and viruses. They instantly remove the hydrogen from the surface proteins, breaking them down.

The broken-down components return to the air as water.

The hydroxide (OH) radicals combine with hydrogen (H) to form wate (H2O), which returns to the air.

Inactivation of
Mould

Mould Spores travel on clothes and through the air- potentially causing allergic reactions when inhaled. Sharp’s long life HEPA Filter captures 99.97% of particles from the air (such as mould spores) as small as 0.3 microns.

Inactivation of
Allergens

Sharp Air Purifiers and specifically our models with a built in humidifier help to control household dust and drifting pollen which is said to cause approximately 80% of allergy related illnesses.

Inactivation of
Viruses

Sharp’s Plasmacluster Ion Technology utilizes both positive and negative ions to seek out and inactivate airborne viruses, flu and colds throughout the year - but especially during the Fall and Winter months.

Reduction of
Odour

Sharp Air Purifiers with its heavy pre-filter and active charcoal filter, will help to eliminate most indoor odours (such as garbage, washroom, smoke and pets).

The Coanda Effect—Creating the Most Comfortable Living Space Possible

To heat and cool air evenly, SHARP air conditioners take advantage of a tendency in nature that has been termed the “Coanda effect.”* This effect refers to the observed tendency of a jet of gas or liquid to be attracted to nearby surfaces. SHARP air conditioners utilize this tendency by aiming the airow at room surfaces, such as walls or ceilings, to more precisely control and direct the ow of air.

*The Coanda effect was discovered in 1930 by the renowned Romanian aerodynamicist H. M. Coanda (b. 1885).

Multi Space Function Controls Airflow for Quick, Constant Conditioning

The Multi Space function works at the press of a button to keep several rooms comfortable at the same time. With an indoor unit installed in a living room, in a stairwell, or in another suitable location, this function can quickly heat or cool adjacent rooms to a set temperature. The fan speed and the louver angle are then automatically controlled so that warm or cool air circulates gently and uniformly to every corner.

Note: This mode is available for TU SERIES and THU SERIES. The effect of this can vary depending on the room layout , the mounting position, the unit and the insulation level of the affected area .

Reverse Swing Louver Rotates 180°

Measuring from the center, the louver rotates approximately 180° degrees. This creates an optimal air current for heating or cooling. You can also set the louver angle as you want by the remote control.

Sharp’s Unique “Nature Wing” Fan Blades Modeled after Nature

Usually, aircraft wing designs are used for airflow control and improved its products based on aerodynamics. However, while aerodynamics is effective for moving large objects, it was discovered that the wings of birds and insects are more effective examples for objects with the size of our products. This forms the basis of Nature Wing.

*1 Fan blades shaped like a dragonfly wing are used in TU and THU series indoor units. *2 Comparison of electricity used to blow the same airflow volume with a conventional model and with a model featuring a dragonfly wing design. *3 Comparison of electricity used to blow the same airflow volume with a conventional fan and with a bird-wing-shaped fan. *4 TU serie (AY-XPC15TU/XPC18TU/XP24TU, AE-X2M20TU) *5 TU series (AY-XPC15TU/XPC18TU/XP24TU, AE-X2M20TU) and THU series

Long Coanda*1 Airflow System

Long diffuser panel *2 opens from the top and bottom

By applying fluid mechanics, the long diffuser panel and air guide on SHARP air conditioners allow air to travel up to 49 ft (15m). During heating, they direct warm air downward, effectively sending it to the floor. During cooling, they direct cool air upward and sisperse it throughout the room. And since air doesn’t blow directly on the room’s occupants, comfortable heating and cooling are ensured.

* 2 This SHARP-patented airflow control technology won the 2008 Fluid Mechanics Technology Prize from the Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics.

Even when it’s 5°F (-15°C) outside, the temperature inside is a comfortable 95°F (35°C) at your feet.

Note: Data gathered using model AY-F40K2 in SHARP test lab (23 m2) with outside temperature of 5° F (-15° C) and heating set to 89,6° F (32° C) with stable room temperature. Temperature distribution will vary depending on usage environment and operational and temperature conditions.

Self Cleaning Function

Plasmacluster Ions minimize the growth of mold inside the air conditioner.

While air blow and dry operations are performed for about 40 minutes, Plasmacluster Ions are blown through the interior of indoor equipment. This prevents odor-causing mold from growing on the surface of the heat exchanger.

Test method: Measurements taken at SHARP’s laboratory using the AY-P28XC model (Japanese model). At an outdoor/room temp. of 27°C and humidity of 70%, a cycle consisting of one hour of cooling operation, 40 minutes of internal cleaning, and 20 minutes off was conducted for 14 days (40 cycles).

4 Way Swing

Automatic control of the horizontal air flow, vertical, lateral left and right side is available to make a uniformly warm or cold room.

*Hot Gas Pipe System (Patented)

The outdoor units of THU Series were designed to provide heat comforting to -27 ° C or to lower temperatures than any other model on the market . Through the SHARP’s Hot Gas Pipe System condensation holes are always free from ice and ensures a smooth flow during defrosts without affecting the energy efficiency.

* Only for the THU Series

Optimal Drainage Holes

With conventional air conditioners malfunctions in winter are often caused by water freezing in the outdoor unit. To prevent this, SHARP outdoor units incorporate numerous large drain holes in the base pan to improve drainage. Caps to cover these holes are also included with the product to facilitate use of the units in warm climates where water is drained out via a drain hose.

Frost Melter

When the heat exchanger is used to defrost the outdoor unit, war gas is channeled to the area near the base pan of the heat exchanger. This prevents drain water from freezing and allows expelled water to be drained easily from the holes in the base pan.

Anti-Corrosion Coating

A special anti-corrosion coating is applied to the heat exchanger, control board, and other key components in the outdoor unit to promote a longer product life.
